Good-bye, Weird Bergdorf's Windows

Last week, I visited Bergdorf Goodman’s holiday window display, among the last still up for the season. As usual for this time of year, the displays were a collection of strange and somewhat disturbing scenes – a woman having her fortune told by a monkey,

a bored looking miner in mink looking at a bat flying near a chandelier, and an unenthusiastic looking mermaid.

Perhaps she looked that way because a nearby jewel-encrusted turtle was probably worth more than she was.

That was certainly a thought that crossed my mind.
Bergdorf’s may have been among the weirder displays this year, with Macy’s Charlie Brown themed windows very charming and Lord & Taylor’s pastry displays quite appealing, but it nevertheless marked the end of a month of lights, tinsel and razzle dazzle in my own backyard. (O.k., I live in Brooklyn, but it’s just a subway ride away.) So how to distract myself until next year? If worse comes to worst, there’s always Bergdorf’s regular windows.

They may lack the tinsel, and sparkle of their holiday displays, but they’re still weird.
